How to Purchase Your New Running Shoes

  • Set aside at least an hour to spend in the store.
  • Bring any old shoes you have used for running or are currently running in.
  • Make sure you go to a specialty running store, such as the ones listed below.
  • Make sure someone who works at the running store assesses your feet and form and helps you choose the right type of shoe for you. The type of shoe will depend on whether you have feet that pronate, supinate, have flat feet, have high arches, etc.
  • Make sure to tell who ever helps you at the store that you are training to run/walk a marathon or 1/2 marathon.
  • Try on at least three different pairs of shoes, and run in them (some stores have treadmills inside, some let you run outside)
  • Make sure to get shoes that are 1/2 size to 1 1/2 sizes bigger than your normal shoe size (this will account for any swelling your feet may have during longer runs).
  • Running shoe stores are also great for apparel and socks. Make sure to get high tech fabrics (such as dri-fit, cool max, etc.) that wicks away moisture from the skin, keeping you dry and warm.
