Welcome to Team in Training
SGV Winter Season
Welcome to our website! Our team (SGV) is a part of Team In Training's Greater Los Angeles Chapter. We train every Saturday morning, usually at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. We are proud to welcome walkers and runners of all abilities.
On this team website you will find all the info to get you started & keep you connected with your team and the TNT/LLS mission. You can also learn about your amazing mentors, support staff and coaches! Also, check out our inspirational honored teammate stories!
VIRGINIA’S MISSION MOMENT: Tyler Update
I heard from Tyler’s mom that Tyler since the reduction of his steroids dose four months ago, he has lost 17 pounds which is 20% of his body weight! You can tell he’s so much more comfortable in his own skin–his mother says he’s able to walk farther and play basketball (something he loves to do) much longer! He also had surgery on his other eye to remove the cataract the anti-rejection drug caused, and now he can see really well. After it’s healed, he wants to take tennis lessons!
Tyler has an amazing spirit and I saw it last Saturday at the Spring team’s honored teammate picnic. It was a joy to watch Tyler laugh, smile, jump and run! Go Team! – Virginia
Koaches Korner – Week #20
PRACTICE INFORMATION: 12/24 (yes.. Christmas Eve)
Where: Rose Bowl Aquatic Center
Time: 7am
Distance: Disney Full: 10. Disney Half: 8.
KOACHES KORNER
Whooohooo!! I’m amazed by the dedication and sheer bravery of this team! It was great to see those of you returning as mentors and captains as your Disney teammates took off for their longest mileage of the season! We’ve passed over the scariest part of training, and now we’re looking at our fellow brave souls to conquer “the World” (Disney World, get it?).
Disney racers, you will now be tapering, which means you can expect to train at less mileage now to allow your body to repair and prepare for the Disney race. Holiday celebrations are raging (I suppose), so it’s essential to monitor your behavior so you can stay healthy in this lead-up to the marathon/half-marathon.
For those still in town, and un-obligated, we’ll be practicing at the Rose Bowl again this Saturday. Disney Full does 10 miles, and Disney Half does 8. Remember when these numbers seemed daunting? Now, they’re completely reasonable distances! Isn’t that crazy? See y’all out there! Love, your Koaches.
Honolulu Hero’s
Congrats to all the team members who completed the Honolulu Marathon. Here is a photos showing the participants who made it back to the Rose Bowl on Saturday!
Everyone did an amazing job… but a special acknowledgement is deserved for Mo Charles who participated in the race despite having viral meningitis (Mo did not run the whole 26.2 miles thankfully). Mo is also donating her running t-shirt (signed by many of us) and her medal from the event to our honored teammate Alessandra.
Go Team!
Koaches Korner – Week #19
Waaahoooo! Well done to all out Honolulu finishers, conquerors and winners! We were so sad that we couldn’t be there with you, but over the moon that you all did an amazing job on completing this challenge. Yay!!!! We would love to see you all back at the bowl this Saturday for your Victory Walk to celebrate your achievement and show off your medals. Please try and make it.
We have one small band left that are getting ready to jet off to Florida and kick some arse over there and we want to get you all prepped for that. So this weekend Disney Full are on 20 miles, and the awesome Halfers on 12 miles. These distances are nothing to sneeze at and for some of you will be the next step to you final goal, so we hope to see you all there. This is your race prep mileage. This is what will get you closest to the actual race experience, minus the thousands of people, Princess Castles and medals at the end…although there will be chocolate milk! And really, that’s sometimes better! So bring all that you think you will need for the actual race. Your water belt, Gu’s, salt etc. We will of course have aid stations for you, but as I recently found out at the Vegas race, they may run out when you most need it, so having as many supplies as you need/want is best. Be prepared and all that. Its going to be perfect training conditions so lets get ready to party and pound some dirt. Let’s rock this.
Koaches Korner – Week #18
PRACTICE INFORMATION:
Where: Rose Bowl aquatic center
Time: 7am
Distance: Disney Full: 16. Disney Half: 8. Honolulu: 10
KOACHES KORNER
Aloha everyone! We’re on our stepping back weekend for Honolulu. How does 10 miles sound? Huh? You like that? Me too. Sounds like a walk in the park. Disney folks, don’t lose your focus! We’ve got another couple of weeks before YOU go off and train your 20 miles! Hang in there, make sure you’re minding your midweeks and paying attention to your body. Eat well, sleep well and dream well.
I might add that Honolulu-bound folks should be preparing to do NOTHING new past this next week. I can’t stress enough how disciplined you need to be when “tapering” off. A taper means you have already done the maximum amount of miles about 3 weeks before your race, then you allow your body to recover by training at less and less mileage in the following 2 weeks up to the race. So, when next Monday comes around, no new activities, no new foods, no new shoes, no new ANYTHING. You’ll be training at an easy 30 minutes that mid-week so you can keep somewhat active, but allowing your body to recover from the major mileage.
Disney, next week you’ll be training at 16 miles. Remember to work on building up good habits, practicing breakfast in the morning, having all your equipment with you, knowing what fuel you like to snack on, what hydration you enjoy… even collecting strategies to keep your spirits up during the longer miles. This is particularly important before doing your 20.
Santa Barbara participants, you’re welcome to come back out to the Rose Bowl and train with the group. Come hang with us as we’ll be cheering on our marathon and half marathon participants.

Megan’s Wings Foundation Adopt a Family Program
From Mission Captain – Virginia Garner
The Megan’s Wings co-founder has contacted me to let me know they need people for this program, so as part of our toy drive this year, we are adopting a family through the Megan’s Wings Foundation. This foundation helps families with children who are undergoing treatment for cancer in many different ways—one of them being helping make these children’s holidays a bit brighter. As you can probably imagine, families with children with cancer are living in a crisis situation. Most of the time, as in the case of a child having a transplant, parents are with him/her 24 hours a day for several weeks. Sometimes this causes them to lose their jobs, or in any case it causes a cut back of the financial resources the family is used to. By adopting a family like this, we help them get through a very tough time during a very important season. Read the rest of this entry »
