LLS funds more blood cancer research than any other voluntary health agency. Many LLS-supported advances help beyond the blood cancer patients for whom they were first developed.
LLS support was instrumental in the development of Velcade®, the targeted treatment for patients with multiple myeloma, now also approved for mantle cell lymphoma.
LLS-funded researchers discovered the value of combining Rituxan® with standard chemotherapy resulting in the first survival rate improvement in 25 years for patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
An LLS funded researcher developed Gleevec®, a pill for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Now, 95% of newly diagnosed, chronic-phase CML, patients survive more than five years with good quality of life.
